EXTEND ZERO TOLERANCE APPROACH ON HANDWASHING - FINNIE

Written by Ross Finnie on Wed 27th Jan 2010

Commenting on the latest statistics about hand washing compliance, published by Health Protection Scotland, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:

"If Ministers are serious about tackling hygiene in hospitals then they will extend their zero tolerance approach to visitors as well as staff. It's good news that staff are generally washing their hands more, but if visitors don't do the same, infections will still spread.

"I am, however, concerned that doctors are still lagging behind when it comes to washing their hands.

"There is simply no excuse for this, particularly given the high profile hygiene drive after the Swine Flu outbreak.

"Infections in hospitals cost lives. As senior medical professionals doctors should be setting an example for other health workers to follow."

Ends.
