EXTEND C. DIFF INQUIRY FURTHER - FINNIE

Written by Ross Finnie on Wed 20th Jan 2010

Commenting on the announcement that the Public Inquiry into C. Difficile at the Vale of Leven will now examine the outbreak in Ninewells hospital, Dundee, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:

"We have said right from the start that this Public Inquiry should look at other outbreaks and not just the fatal outbreak at Vale of Leven. It took the Health Secretary months before ordering a public inquiry and longer still to accept that its remit should be extended.

"So while I am pleased that Ninewells will be included in the inquiry, we are looking for Lord MacLean to cast the net still further and include for instance, the outbreaks in NHS Orkney and Grampian.

"Patients go into hospital to get better not worse and C. Difficile can be a killer disease. This inquiry needs to get to the bottom of what causes these serious outbreaks so that lessons can be learned."

Ends.
