FINNIE PLEASED PERMISSION FOR WEST END DEVELOPMENT REFUSED

Written by Ross Finnie on Thu 7th Jan 2010

West of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Ross Finnie is pleased permission for a supermarket development in Greenock's West End has been refused.

Inverclyde Planning Board discussed the application for 34 flats and two retail units at 52 to 54 Finnart Street and 19 Robertson Street. Councillors voted 5:3 to refuse the application on the grounds that it didn't fit in with the areas planning strategy would lead to parking, traffic and noise problems and would affect viability of town centre shops.

Commenting Mr Finnie said:

"I am pleased permission for the supermarket development at the junction of Finnart Street and Robertson Street has been refused.

"The junction is already congested and the original permission for new flats was perfectly adequate. Given the depressing number of vacant units in the town centre I am pleased the planning board has recognised the undesirability of promoting peripheral developments."
