FINNIE WELCOMES DIABETES REPORT (14.11.07)

Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health Ross Finnie MSP has commented today on the importance of raising

awareness of diabetes in Scotland.

To coincide with World Diabetes Day, Diabetes UK Scotland will tonight launch a report into diabetes in Scotland. The report will highlight that Scotland has one of the highest rates in the world for Type 1 diabetes and aims to raise awareness of the condition.

Commenting ahead of the review, Mr Finnie said:

"I welcome this report from Diabetes UK Scotland and hope that its findings can go some way to improving people in Scotland's knowledge and understanding of this condition.

"It is shocking that 90 per cent of young people in Scotland with diabetes are at risk of serious health complications because they lack the information and support to manage their condition properly.

"The Scottish Liberal Democrats want to see the SNP Government provide greater support for preventative and anticipatory care, helping people to manage their illnesses rather than waiting for them to appear on the radar only when acute care is needed."
